Volume discounts are standard in the promotional industry. You may find that ordering more product than you actually need won’t cost you too much more. That way, you have enough items to distribute and then have an extra supply to hand out to new clients, employees, friends and colleagues.

Other promotional costs to keep in mind include:

• Set-up/prototype fee: Typically, the distributor charges $100-$300 to set up specific plates and templates to create the prototype for your items.
• Minimum order fee: You won’t find too many vendors that will print you a dozen t-shirts or a single box of pens! You may be required to pay for a minimum order of 500-1,000 pieces or $500-$700, even if you don’t need that much product.
• Design work: If you don’t have in-house staff to create the appropriate logo and messaging for your promotional products, a vendor can develop one for you for $50 to $75 per hour.

A final word of advice from PromosThatRock.com: Avoid the temptation to shop on price alone! If you find a distributor that offers baseball caps with your logo for $4 apiece and the industry standard is $9-$12, red flags should go up immediately! You likely won’t get quality materials or a clear logo for a cut rate. Besides, you’re promoting your company.
